Alive and Beating Together at the 17th World Ageing Festival 2026

At ASPIRE55, we believe ageing is not something to manage or contain. It is something to embrace, shape, and strengthen over time. Yet many of us have been conditioned to see ageing through a different lens; one that centres on what we lose, what slows down, and what becomes harder.

But what if we asked instead: What can we build?

Strength, in this sense, extends beyond the physical. It reflects the resilience of the mind, the steadiness of our emotions, and the quiet courage to step into something unfamiliar. It shapes an approach to ageing that is not simply about grace, but about living with strength, intention, and a sense of purpose.

Finding Our Beat Together
In the lead-up to the 17th World Ageing Festival 2026, our philosophy on ageing has taken on a tangible form.

35 of our members have been gathering regularly, preparing for two performances that will be presented during the festival. What stands out during these sessions is not just the preparation, but the atmosphere that surrounds it. There is a shared energy amongst our intergenerational members in the room, where conversations flow easily between practice and encouragement comes naturally.

As one member, Patricia Hee, 75, pictured above in white, shares,
“I saw only happy faces, big smiles and laughter at the first Samba Drumming rehearsal. It was pure joy! So amazing that small and large drums and shakers mix together to create such beautiful Brazilian music. So glad that I am part of the Samba Drumming group given the opportunity to perform at the 17th World Ageing Asia Festival 2026.”

Her words capture something that is hard to articulate, yet immediately felt; the sense of being part of something larger than oneself. When the group takes the stage, what you see is not just the performance, but the journey behind it; the consistency of showing up, the willingness to learn, and the experience of growing together.

A Different Rhythm of Ageing

For the opening ceremony, our group will present a vibrant Samba Drumming performance which requires coordination, stamina, and attentiveness, while inviting each participant to be fully present in the moment.

On the second day, they will perform Fitness Ball Drumming, where rhythm and movement come together to engage balance, coordination, and cardiovascular effort. While the format differs, the intention remains the same; to move with awareness and to move together.

These sessions go beyond preparation. They offer a glimpse into a different rhythm of ageing; one that is active, engaged, and continuously evolving. When movement is approached in this way, it influences more than the body, fostering confidence, strengthening connections, and opening the door to new experiences.

Feel the Beat with Us

The 17th World Ageing Festival brings together conversations, ideas, and perspectives on what it means to age in today’s world, alongside lived experiences that quietly demonstrate what is possible.

We invite you not only to witness this, but to reflect on where it might begin for you. As you take in the energy of a group moving with intention, you may recognise something familiar; the simple decision to try, to show up, or to explore something new.

Come and experience the energy, the spirit, and the sense of connection of ASPIRE55 during the 17th World Ageing Festival 2026.

You may arrive as a spectator, but you may leave inspired to be part of something more.

The Secret to Longevity: How Strength Adds Life to Your Years

As we grow older, many of us rely on walking to stay healthy. “I walk every day,” we might say; and that’s wonderful. Doctors often recommend it because it improves circulation, lifts mood, and reduces the risk of chronic disease. For many of us, a morning stroll around the neighbourhood or an evening walk with friends can be a simple, delightful way to maintain overall health and stay moving. While walking is excellent for health, it doesn’t provide the strength we need to stay independent and enjoy life as we age.

Sarcopenia: The Hidden Enemy of Ageing
The real challenge of ageing is not wrinkles or grey hair; it is the gradual loss of muscle. Our muscles naturally shrink over time in a process called sarcopenia. Research published in The Lancet Healthy Longevity shows that adults lose around 3-8% of muscle mass each decade after 30 years-old, with the loss accelerating after 60 years-old (Cruz-Jentoft et al., 2019).

Over time, this loss can make simple daily tasks harder. Standing up from a chair, carrying groceries, climbing stairs, or maintaining balance all require strength. When muscles weaken, independence and confidence can be affected.

Strength: Living a Life that Matters

Adding years to our lives mean very little if it is not lived to its fullest. This is where strength comes in. While walking supports the heart and lungs, we need exercises that challenge our muscles to build muscle and preserve our independence.

When muscles work against resistance, they adapt and become stronger. Research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine shows that resistance training significantly improves strength, balance, and mobility in older adults (Liu & Latham, 2009). Maintaining muscle power reduces the risk of falls, keeps daily activities manageable, and allows people to continue enjoying the things they love.

ASPIRE55: Your Trusted Partner

At ASPIRE55, Singapore’s first social health club for the ageless, strength is a central focus. Our programmes help members maintain strength, balance, and confidence through safe, guided exercises.

Sessions emphasise functional movements, core stability, and overall body strength, helping members perform everyday activities with ease. Group workouts also provide social support, encouraging friendships and community alongside physical activity.

Healthy ageing is not about extreme workouts or intimidating gyms; it is about small, consistent choices that support both body and mind.

Your Next Step in the Right Direction
If you already walk regularly, you are on the right path. It supports cardiovascular health, mental wellbeing, and overall mobility. However, to maintain independence, improve balance, and continue doing the things you love (maybe even explore new things!), adding strength exercises a few times a week can make a remarkable difference.

The most effective approach combines walking with strength training. Walking keeps the body active, while strength exercises preserve the muscle power needed to remain independent and embrace life fully.

Because the secret to longevity is not just living longer. It is staying strong enough to celebrate a long life.

Ready to add more life to your years?
Send us a chat today!

Stronger Together: ASPIRE55’s Outdoor Fitness Programme (90 Mins)

The morning sun peeked over the trees at Singapore Botanic Gardens, casting golden rays on the lush greenery. A gentle breeze carried the scent of dew-kissed grass, and the sound of birds chirping blended seamlessly with soft chatter and laughter.

Dressed in comfortable workout gear, a group of older persons gathered near the Swan Lake, stretching and warming up under the guidance of ASPIRE55’s senior fitness trainers.

“Alright, everyone! Let’s start with some dynamic stretches,” called out Weng Keong, the head trainer and physiotherapist, demonstrating a series of gentle movements. “We’re not just exercising—we’re reactivating our bodies!”

The group followed along, some moving confidently while others took their time. Each stretch, squat, and lunge was met with encouraging smiles and words of motivation. A few members used stretch towels for additional support, while others leaned against a sturdy tree for balance.

As the session wrapped up with a relaxing cooldown and deep breathing exercises, everyone sat down on the grass, taking in the beauty of nature around them.

ASPIRE55’s outdoor fitness programme wasn’t just about movement—it was about connection, laughter, and proving that age was just a number. As the group gathered for a final cheer, the energy was contagious. They were stronger, healthier, and, most importantly, together.

ASPIRE55 Webinar Talkshow: How will CARs (Controlled Articular Rotations) improve your mobility and balance? (11 Jun 2020)

ASPIRE55 Webinar Talkshow: How will CARs (Controlled Articular Rotations) improve your mobility and balance? (11 Jun 2020)

Our Speaker: Mr Samuel Oliver Lo

Sam is young, dynamic and aims to change the way we think about Rehabilitation. He is a Rehab and Performance Trainer, and regular Senior Trainer at the ASPIRE55 Clubhouses.

What is Controlled Articular Rotations (CARs)?
CARs are one of the tools that help increase joint mobility. By using active rotational movements at each individual joint to stimulate articular adaptations, the range, control, and stability at the joint can be improved.

Example of CARs (Please perform these exercises gently. Remember to listen to your body and stay safe)

CAR in neck joint
Tips: Take it slow and perform the rotation up to your maximum, stopping briefly at each quarter points.

CAR in shoulder joint
Tips: Make a fist for better control and keep your arm straight.

CAR in knee joint
Tips: keep your knee bent with heel on the floor, remember to keep your knee pointing forward.

Behind the Scene of ASPIRE55 Team: Work from Home Edition

Behind the Scene of ASPIRE55 Team: Work from Home Edition

As the Circuit Breaker was lifted on 1 June and Singapore moved into phase one of re-opening, the ASPIRE55 team are gearing up for clubhouse activities to resume. Unfortunately, there are no timeline on the actual date.

During this time, the ministry of health has advised that seniors should continue to stay home and stay active.

So, for the month of June, ASPIRE55 will continue to offer our wide variety of online contents.
- Live workout sessions via Zoom
- Happy Hour series
- Brain Games
- Live Webinar Talkshows
- Weekly one-minute stretch series

Organizing and delivering quality contents for our members is no easy task. ASPIRE55 team meets regularly to plan, discuss, and iron out all the details. Here is a sneak peek into the "serious discussion" faces. Can you recognize us?

ASPIRE55 Happy Hour: Breakfast with Cayden (Tue, 2 Jun 2020 @10am)

ASPIRE55 Happy Hour: Breakfast with Cayden
(Tue, 2 Jun 2020 @10am)

Menu: Fluffy scrambled eggs + Molten eggs combo with home-baked ciabatta bread served with fresh avocado and red tomatoes

This morning, our very own Commonwealth Clubhouse Manager, Cayden, took us through a step-by-step session on how he prepared his sumptuous breakfast meal.

On the plate:
Fluffy scrambled eggs
Lava egg
Fresh avocado with lemon juice
Fresh tomatoes
Home-baked ciabatta

Fresh from the oven

By preparing the dough the night before, Cayden was ready to start baking right away. The ciabatta turned out perfect with crispy crust and soft fluffy inside.

Fresh from the stove

Cracked the eggs into the pan while the pan is still cool. Add butter and keep stirring on medium heat. Turn the heat down once the egg starts to cook and continue to stir until ready. Choose how runny as preferred.

Fresh from the market

Juicy tomatoes and ripe avocado provide essential vitamins and keep the meal balance. Check out Cayden’s slicing skills. He handled the knife like a pro.

Yummilicious yolk

Put room temperature eggs into boiling water for 4.5 min and then place them in ice bath to stop the cooking process. This will preserve the molten “lava” inside.

Look at that yolk oozing out from the molten egg. Ciabatta is the perfect medium for dipping into that golden goodness.

A great way to start the day

Thank you, Cayden, for a fun and yummy session. Don’t forget to join us in the next installment of Happy Hour. Here is a sneak peak of the activities lined up for next week.

Experience the online version of ASPIRE55 with 50% off our digital access pass in May 2020

Greetings, we hope you are well and we just wanted to say Happy Mother's Day and Happy Sunday to all of you. Since the circuit breaker started, ASPIRE55 has had to move many of our activities online, including our signature seniors strength training and balance for falls prevention exercise series that was typically held in our clubhouses.

In a short span of time, we had to use our creativity to think about the various activities that over 50s may enjoy, how to encourage everyone to start using the various technology tools such as Zoom (now with enhanced security), that would enable us to conduct the online activities, and mostly, how to encourage more people to exercise at home via live online seniors strength training and balance programmes and brain training activities.

Here is a sneak peak of the activities lined up for next week.

11 May (Mon)

*For the brain activity, we will be introducing to you an activity focused on processing speed and reaction All you need for this round is some space to move your arms and legs! While the workout with Sam will be more focused on mobility coupled with movement exercises and will be conducted in English. Do prepare the following items for the session:

12 May (Tue)

Hear from Mrs Pauline Ong

Ha ha

“If you were to ask me.. 4 years ago to join a gym.. I will say NO! NO!

Then, I was terrified, self conscious, embarrassed and uneasy in gyms.. either at my Club or at my Condominium!

It was really ME, as there are nothing wrong at these gyms..

I just felt uneasy !

But, but.. 4 years ago... I was almost “dragged “ to try Aspire55 by a very persistent friend.

So, I reluctantly followed her.

And the minute, that I had pushed open the glass door of Aspire55...

...the sound of laughter, chatter, the waft of a pandan cake, the shoes at the entrance... just warmed my heart...

I am with MY OWN KIND n “family”...

Please, watch my testimony on video below.

Finally , the quarterly assessment is really valuable $$! Even my doctor says how comprehensive such reports are.. of my health n strength !

And also, these assessments have had saved my money n time.. if I was required to have them done at a private clinic or hospital!

I am into my 4th year.. ha ha .. lost count!!

And anyway,

why do I need to count, when I am having so much

fun.

I am almost 75.

Btw, my two older sisters are Aspire55 Members too...

Your questions about Coronavirus (COVID-19) answered - by infectious disease expert Dr Leong Hoe Nam

[Sent by Gov.sg – 12 Feb]

Your questions about Coronavirus (COVID-19) answered - by infectious disease expert Dr Leong Hoe Nam

How does it spread?

Much like familiar cold viruses or influenza, COVID-19 spreads primarily by respiratory droplets, which come out through saliva or when we sneeze. It is not in the air.

Is it possible to contract COVID-19 from someone who is not showing symptoms?

Those with no symptoms are less likely to have nasal discharge or cough, and are hence less likely to transmit. In truth, we suspect the actual risk to be very low.

What treatments exist to help COVID-19 patients?

Most of the time, best supportive care (i.e. adequate hydration, food and oxygen when needed) will work for more than 90% of patients.

The outbreak of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) which originated in Wuhan China, has been declared by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a global emergency. 11,860 cases ( as at Feb 2) have been reported in China with the death toll of 259 people. It has spread to almost all continents with reports of 164 cases in other countries.

What are the symptoms?

The symptoms cannot be differentiated from the common cold and flu. These are fever, cough and in the more severe cases, there is shortness of breath and pneumonia of differing severity. The worse the pneumonia severity, the greater the risk of fatality. Dr Shawn Vasoo, the acting Clinical Director at the National Centre for Infectious Diseases, Singapore, estimated that 20% of those infected would become severely ill.

How is the virus treated?

There are no specific antiviral medications to treat this virus. Medical treatment is limited. The infection has to be overcome by your immune system. Therefore you should take steps to strengthen your immune system as well as avoid behaviour which crashes your immune system.

11 Ways To Protect Yourself From Virus Outbreaks

1. Mask Up

I know the papers say to only mask up if you are sick. However, some believe that they are protecting themselves from the virus being spread from others coughing or sneezing. If you are in a crowded public place or enclosed space such as the plane, then I would recommend masking up even if you aren’t sick. Reports have stated that the symptoms cannot be seen until 9-14 days after one has contracted the coronavirus.

2. Protect Your Mouth, Nose and Eyes

Avoid touching your mouth, nose and eyes after touching public surfaces. This is how the virus enters your body. If you are in an enclosed space with recirculating air such as on a plane or a public place like an airport, hospital or clinic, I would recommend also protecting your eyes with glasses.

3. Practice Good Hygiene

Wash your hands with soap after touching public surfaces and avoid touching your eyes, nose, face and even your hair until you have washed your hands. My daughter uses a tissue to open doors and when touching bannisters. She uses her car key to touch surfaces like lift buttons and the ATM machine. Sometimes she uses her knuckle but then washes her hands immediately after. I used to think she was a little bit of a crazy germaphobe, but at this time, these may be good practices. You could also clean aeroplane seats and surfaces with antibacterial wipes first before touching them.

4. Catch Up On Sleep

Night owls should sleep earlier and get 8 hours of sleep. Between 10 pm to 2 am are the important times when the body carries out its repair so it’s most beneficial to be asleep by 10 pm. Sleep deprivation takes a major toll on your immune system which makes you more susceptible to falling ill.

5. Avoid Sugar

Sugar depresses your immune system function. There are many hidden sugars in foods such as salad dressings and ketchup so do read the product labels carefully.

6. Eat Whole Nutritious Food

Nutritious whole foods like fruits and vegetables, whole grains and proteins nourish your body’s cells and helps strengthen of your immune system.

7. Get Some Sun

Sun exposure is known to improve immune function. Vitamin D from the sun is anti-viral and helps your immune response to viruses.

8. Avoid Alcohol and Smoking.

Alcohol is a diuretic so it dehydrates your body. It also causes loss of vitamins and minerals leaving you nutritional deficit and depresses your immune system. Smoking (including second-hand smoke) causes a reduction in immune system function.

9. Refrain from Over-exercise.

Aggressive exercise can increase cortisol and this depresses your immune system. Consider doing some moderate exercise at home.

10. Be aware of immunosuppressive drugs

People on steroids are at risk, including cancer patients on radiation and chemotherapy. Antihistamines, antacids and acid reflux medication depress the immune system and decrease your body’s ability to fight infection. Cancer patients need to take extra precautions.

11. Increase your serving of Santivia Immune

Natural Killer (NK) cells are your body’s defence against viruses. They are your body’s assassin cells. Studies have shown that people who are chronically sick have low numbers of NK cells. You can’t have enough NK cells!

Santivia immune contains the proprietary and unique immune modulator, Ai/E10, with the synergistic anti-oxidant ingredient of blueberries.

A US clinical trial demonstrated that Ai/E10 increases NK cell activity by 300% in ‘healthy’ (i.e. not chronically sick) people taking it for 3 months. Another trial in 107 serious chronic sick patients showed an increase in NK cells by 1250% when given high serving sizes of Ai/E10 and followed for 18 months.

We urge you to take active steps to strengthen your immune system by taking Santivia immune daily especially during this virus epidemic and when travelling.

The adult serving size we recommend for Santivia immune is 1 capsule twice daily. This is an average maintenance serving. However, in high-risk situations, we strongly urge adults to start at 4 capsules daily, preferably in divided servings. The aim is to get a faster improvement in immune function.

For children from 2 years to 12, half the adult serving is recommended. 1 capsule daily as a maintenance serving. 2 capsules daily for intensive use, preferably in divided servings.

For vulnerable people with already compromised immune systems, intake of Santivia Immune can be increased even to 6 to 8 capsules.

Santivia Immune is a food, not a drug. It will not interact with any medication.

Keep healthy and safe everyone!

Enablement approaches to successful ageing

Solutions for an ageing society should start from enablement policies. The next generation of older adults want independence, live at home and also dignity. When they are weak, let’s use rehabilitation and exercise to enable them to be stronger as they age, when they are in a nursing home, let’s use funding policies to motivate operators further to improve their functional abilities. When they they want employment opportunities, let’s get corporates motivated on innovative approaches to engage and retain older workers and enable them to work for as long as they desire. When they want to age at home, let’s look at improving building codes for all residential developments to look at age friendly universal design. And let’s look at home and the people around our immediate circles, what is our own reactions when they get weaker or experience pain? How do we enable and support them to continue doing the things they love and experiencing a good quality of life? In Asia, we have a huge dependence on domestic helpers to do things for our elderly parents as they age. Let’s try to get our helpers to organise social activities for our parents, accompany them to see their other ageing siblings and friends, take them shopping, to the markets or something fun. Helpers that help enable qualify of life for older people will be one step towards creating an ageing friendly world in Asia.

Grandma went to a happy place

Sometimes we have a feeling about something but we just can't place it. Last night before I went to bed, I texted mum to ask her to meet me in the morning to visit mama. Our usual routine was to go in the afternoon. Somehow, I wanted to see her in the morning today. We arrived at 8+, Dad came along too. Like all typical overly concerned caregivers, I went to ask the nurse whats Grandma's health stats for the morning. Her blood pressure was now 63/36, and she looked like she was breathing heavily, so the nurses got her some oxygen. By this point, Grandma had already gone without food and water for 5 days. I shared the info with my family. My aunty was also on the way over. Aunty arrived shortly, with a ang pow in tow, you see, mama was a big lottery fan, and she just won first prize a few days ago, aunty gave her the red packet and had some time to talk to mama too. Then all of us, together with the pastor were just chatting as usual in the room when we noticed that mama had left us, she just closed her eyes and went to a happy place. Thank you mama, for giving me a chance to be by your side and the lifetime of love you have given me.

Grandma Mary's Story - Christmas Celebrations Ho! Ho! Ho!

It's been a really exciting month for mama. In the lead up to christmas, we have been really busy. Under the umbrella of Christmas, its given me many opportunities to have conversations and activities with mama. Mama's room has been decorated with christmas lights for the past two months, she loves it, I don't think I will take them down. It's also been a busy period at the nursing home, where volunteers come to carol, staff are busy decorating and organising parties, and also a time where mama puts in even more effort than usual to look pretty. We had her hair and nails done too, in time for festivities. And she takes even more care to pick out her clothes. so she can look pretty for all the photos. We get busy talking about presents for the staff, talking about the christmas party programmes, enjoying the carols, taking pics of every tree we come across, and making a lot of new friends, and visiting the old friends. Mama loves being social, and christmas gives her lots of opportunities to have conversations and just have fun. Although mama can't join us at the ASPIRE55 annual christmas potluck at our clubhouse this year, I keep her in the loop with everything we do there (I show her lots of pics and videos), after all, Mama is my no.1 fan, ambassador for the club and motivation behind it.

Grandma Mary's Story - Conversations about death

Mama refers to the process of her passing on as "When I say bye bye". She asks me if I will be ok. I told her don't worry, I will be good. We will take one day at a time, when the time comes, it comes, she will close her eyes when she gets too tired, and then she will say go. She and I will both be ok, I reassure her. I realise I have come to enjoy patting her on her back and stroking her forehead. Once upon a time, she used to do that for me. She used to fuss over me, give me water when I cough, cook for me when I am hungry, worry about me. Now its the reverse. Its the cycle of life. Mama and I often joke about it that now, she is my baby and I look after her. We have a bond that is honest and it is based on us spending so much time together in the last 37 years of my life. We have had a lot of time together, we have had holidays and meals, and now we have lots of walks together in her wheelchair, talking about things we see. Sometimes random, sometimes from her memory, but usually just laughing and having a good time. She lives in a faith based nursing home now, but fundamentally, she has always prayed with joss sticks. At this point, she seems a little confused with what her religion should be. But I tell her, just whatever you are comfortable with, just be at peace. Mama doesn't want us to fuss over her funeral, but she has many friends, so I want to it close to her home, where all our neighbours can come. After all, everyone is old, whats important is for them to be able to say their good byes if she likes. From what I know of grandma, she has always liked conversations, laughter, food, fun. So the funeral should be more like a party, a meeting of friends and family. Perhaps it might be controversial to some, but at the end of the day, birth and death are both celebrations of life.

Grandma Mary's Story - Inspirations for the future nursing home

The future nursing home in my opinion is a skilled nursing facility with 24 hour care and high emphasis on rehabilitation and social engagement. We have our own rooms for privacy to be ourselves and decorated according to our own personalities. We are located walking distance to shops, cafes and the community.

Residents move in only when they are frail and can no longer perform many of the daily living activities themselves. This might be the last place we will move into before we say "bye bye" to the world. The environment is energetic, engaging and happy. Funding is means tested and ability tested. In addition, it's also supported by private long term care insurance.

Plus, facilities that improve health outcomes and physical conditions of the residents receive an annual funding bonus based on a pre-set list of benchmarks. We are old, but we can still be stronger as we age. Just a little slower, but we get there.

No matter what age we are, we will all have someone that is ageing around us that we care dearly for. But as we age, we need different options and choices too. From independent living for the active and able, to assisted living for those who need more help, skilled nursing for 24 hour care needs, etc. And greater focus on rehab and exercise as an integrated part of daily living and combined with social engagement, not just a segment on the time table.

While we are a country great on healthcare and hardware, social isolation and loneliness can be the bigger killer. For those who visit their loved ones regularly in a nursing home, I would encourage you to smile and share some of that time by acknowledging some of the other elderly around you. Take the time to say hi, wave, smile. Small gestures can go along way. Not everyone gets regular visitors, and it does get lonely and boring for many elderly in the homes.

Recently, a social commentator in Singapore was filmed by Lien Foundation on her experience in living for two weeks in a local nursing home. “I didn’t prepare myself for how bad that actually was.” For 2 weeks, TV presenter Anita Kapoor lived like one of the elderly residents at a nursing home, for an upcoming social documentary.

Grandma Mary's Story - Fever scare and a magical rebounce

Living in a nursing home, her infections are controlled by oral antibiotics. No intravenous tubes are allowed. Grandma gets oral morphine every four hours to control her pain, and antibiotics tablets pounded into power form for her to consume a few times a day. This helps to manage her infections. We have been managing the infections rather well and keeping them at bay since leaving the hospital. Its been two weeks since she has been off the strong intravenous antibiotics at the hospital and we are surprised too that her body has been strong enough to starve off the infections. Its great!

But today, we had a fever scare. I arrived in the morning as usual to find Grandma having breakfast in the common area. She was even asking for an extra egg and she was in good spirits. After breakfast, she even took part in a round of balloon tennis with the rest of the residents. Seeing she was in good spirits, I asked if she would like me to take her for a walk around and to visit her friends at the day centre. She said 'Yes'. Great. I was excited, I love thing her out of her ward area and just to wonder around so that she could experience a change of environment. She had a great time chatting with her friend Lay Ha, and she even took part in another round of ball games.

So it was totally unexpected when I found her shivering. Her mouth was chattering, her hands were shaky and her whole body was shaking uncontrollably. I found a care staff to take her temperature, it read 38.2 degrees. Thats when I took her back to her room and had the nurses take over to look after her. Grandma looked really pale and weak and she was still shaky. I was probably turning green inside too. I would like to help her, but there was nothing much I could do except assist with the cold compress. Texted the family of course, updated her condition and kept everyone informed.

But who would have guessed, in a short span of two hours, she bounced right back into a healthy glow, regular temperature, regular blood pressure, and she asked for lunch. Wow! She was even receiving visitors and chatting with everyone in her bright and chirpy manner.

Every day is indeed a blessing that I appreciate. But its not just about grandma, life is a precious and vulnerable commodity. We should love and live every moment. Grandma's bounce is not just about the power of medicine to fight of infections, but I am sure her mind is stronger than many of us. She loves life. She loves conversations, she loves people around her. Sometimes I would like her to rest more, but then, she has limited time, and talking to people is what she enjoys most. Conversations to her might be better than the best that medicine offers.

Grandma Mary's Story - Getting out of bed

We try to get Grandma out and about as much as possible. Somedays, she is just too tired, but sometimes we succeed. Today, my aunty got her out of bed and over to the day activity centre where she met her old friends, did some activities, and most importantly, enjoyed time outside of the bedroom. Although she is getting more tired, being stuck in bed all day is not good for her bedsores, so its really good for her when she is able to get out and just move from bed to wheelchair for a change.

Grandma Mary's Story - Staying engaged with 4D Lottery

Grandma loves buying 4D. Although she can't buy the numbers herself now, she tasks my aunty to take down her favourite numbers and to place the bets for her. Buying lottery is probably a national hobby amongst our elders in Singapore. Checking the results when its published three times a week is an important activity. Aunty found a way to engage grandma by asking her to write down the winning numbers.

Grandma Mary's Story - Good days and bad days

Although we have all come to accept that grandma is going through her end of life journey, nothing really quite prepares us to see her getting weaker. Some days, she looks really really frail, her hands are cold, her feet are cold, and she looks really tired. I am almost reluctant to head home at night, and even when I get home, i wake up often in the middle of the night, checking my phone, making sure its not on silent, and then convincing myself that I am over thinking before I head back to sleep again. But I guess the great thing about grandma is that her mind is stronger than her body. And when I head back the next day, she is almost like a brand new person. She eats well, she is chatty, energetic and she is filled with life again. She is definitely shrinking, its inevitable, the weight loss, but I bet if we did a brain scan, she is definitely having a very healthy brain. Perhaps its her positive outlook in life that is helping her body over come this very tough period. Bright and optimistic, enthusiastic about life, she is always ready to overcome any challenges ahead. She has been bed ridden for two weeks now, but she is not giving up on her exercises. She is still trying to do what she can, moving her toes, lifting her feet, showing off her many exercise moves with her hands to me.

Grandma Mary's Story - Did we know she had cancer?

Did we know she had cancer? No. We found out only on Oct 13 when she was at A&E and the doctors told us. Did we guess? Yes. Cause she had been experiencing a rapid weight loss over the last few months. Maybe she knew something was wrong, but she didn't really want to get it checked, and we didn't insist either. Grandma has always had an active life, and fully independent. A few years back, she started using a walking stick, but she would still go about her daily activities on her own without help. She would go the near by market and kopitiam to meet her friends, do her hair and nails, every tuesday and thursday, she would volunteer at The Salvation Army Peacehaven Nursing Home in Changi, chatting with fellow elderly, exercising with them. I don't think she really knows what volunteer means, but she would start making friends with everyone from the staff to the more chatty elderly who where there with her, and she has a good buddy there, Lay Ha. Grandma's current frailty and decline is difficult to see as a family member, but, its what I always envision it to be. She would be fit and healthy for as long as possible, the decline would be fast and she would go to sleep. I really wouldn't want her living in a nursing home for the next 10 years of her life. For Grandma, she valued being active, being amongst people and being independent. This was the quality of life she wanted, and she maintained it for as long as she could hold on.

Grandma Mary's Story - Advanced care planning

Grandma has left most of the medical decisions for the family to decide. But, because she is still mentally sharp and aware, we have been keeping her involved in the major medical and care decisions. From the hospital, we had doctors and family sit with her to explain her condition and help her to understand what was going on, and now that we are in a nursing home, the pastoral care and social work team helped us to take the step further. Today, she was involved in her advanced care planning, sharing with us how she would like to be treated in the event she needed medical assistance, would she want CPR that may lead to an ICU stay, would she want to pass away without medical intervention? How would she like her funeral to be conducted? These are all difficult questions that will face all of us in an ageing population, but we have address them. In a way, grandma is lucky she can make those decisions and when the time comes, we can act according to her wishes. Essentially, she doesn't want pain, no tubes, no injections, no prolonging of her life if she is no longer able to do it herself. I am amazed by her strength as she addressed each of the questions posed in a calm manner, and at times, funny too. eg. Why would I want vegetarian food at the funeral, I don't really like that when I am alive. Or, actually, you guys can decide for me, I won't be around by then. Its just her trying to inject some humour into the situation, but thats her, always laughing, smiling. Having some fun with whatever card that life deals us. Humorously, she told the pastoral care team, would you like me to sign any documents?

Grandma Mary's Story - The day we went to A&E

Grandma is currently going through end of life care and I will use this blog to share her story and my experience as a primary caregiver.

Here is when it began. We noticed grandma's weight loss from a few months ago, and she started losing more and more weight. We knew something was up, we had a feeling it might be bad, but she didn't want to get it checked. Finally on that day, she told my aunty that her discharge in diapers had been more than normal and she agreed to visit a GP. But even so, she still went for her usual exercises for the day. The GP said she should go to A&E for further checks, we tried not to scare her, so she had some oats first before taking a taxi with Aunt and Mum to the hospital. At the A&E, the usual triage process happens and grandma went thru a whole barrage of checks before finally getting a bed at 2am. From 6pm, she was wheeled into the patient's only area where family was not allowed. Total wait time for 84 year old elderly lady = 9 hours. Doc did give us a quick update at 630pm and it confirmed that she did have a growth and its likely to be end stage cervical cancer and they found large lump (5cm) and she would have to be warded. It wasn't a big surprise, we kinda knew. I hope she would get a bed soon and she can undergo the care needed. But the wait continued and we waited outside. It's pretty much a waiting game at A&E. I decided to go bug the staff at 8pm and I managed to give her some dinner. From the caregiver's perspective, I felt at a loss waiting outside in the waiting area cause I was not allowed inside where grandma was kept at, yet I had no information given to me about what was going on with her. It was frustrating and worrying at the same time. I decided to play the sad puppy card and told the security guards about grandma and that i wanted to give her water, could they let me in, which they kindly did. (Grandma is frail so she would have been unable to get her own water or food). Finally at 11pm, I went to bug them again, and thats when they said they would message us on the phone when she got a bed. At this point, grandma had fallen asleep inside already. I understand the healthcare system and the A&E process, but as our population faces a rapidly ageing challenge, I think we need more sensitivity to the needs of the elderly when they are in the A&E. Eg. blankets, water, diaper changes, having the emergency bell available to them instead of hidden away in some corner, access to food if they are expected to wait longer. Healthcare teams focus on treatments, which is great, but sometimes we do need a little more empathy for the elderly patients because their needs are a little different to the average patient.

Cool Ageing Innovations: Ton Ton Sumo Voice Rehab for Elderly in Japan

I came across this video that features the use of voice technology to engage elderly in Japan in a sumo wrestling match. This really looks interesting, and I see a lot of potential where rehabilitation can be made more fun and interactive for our elderly staying in the facilities.

Intergenerational aspirational ageing - The Future model for Singapore

ASPIRE55 is about intergenerational aspirational ageing – young and old supporting each other to age in our own homes. Ageing impacts us at all ages. Whether we are 25, 45, or 65, we all have someone around us that is growing older. I have always looked forward to growing older, having the maturity to process experiences, appreciating life for what it gives us, contentment and having the financial security and luxury of time to do the things that mean the most to me.

I believe each generation’s outlook towards quality of life and lifestyle is different. Our approach towards filial piety is changing as we head towards a world without borders and smaller family units. In the past, being filial means that you hire someone to look after your parents as they age, and to them, this was a much appreciated gesture and a sign that they are well loved by their children. However, a very wise Professor once told me, if you care too much for someone, you remove their ability to be independent. If you stop letting someone boil water for six months, they will forget how to boil water.

The current generation of baby boomers (55 – 67 years old) and older adults are a more well educated, widely traveled and fiercely independent group. They value their freedom, they are financially secure, and are health conscious. They view living with their children as a choice, and many have already chosen not to. Instead, the approach towards filial piety for this group is now transforming to “how we can make them happy”.

Both “filial piety” and “laughter” is pronounced as “xiao” in mandarin. As our society evolves, so will our attitudes. One important question that we should ask ourselves is what can we do more to age in good health, with dignity and independence so that we can improve the quality of our life as we age. Happiness is more than the material things in life, its about having a sense of purpose and feeling emotionally fulfilled. The ageing population is not a challenge for our society, the bigger problem is social isolation and loneliness.

How will the Apple Watch help you take charge of your health?

"Services focused on tracking health will be able to use the Watch interface to display relevant, up-to-the-minute statistics in a way that’s more convenient than on a smartphone, or on a monitoring device’s screen. It will do this using the processing power of your iPhone, rather than a mobile chip onboard the watch itself, and updates will be sent to the watch wirelessly." - http://www.wired.com/2015/02/apple-watch-apps/

The benefits come in terms of reduced medications, lower staff turnover, lesser incidences of aggressive behaviors associated with living with Dementia. Whilst the first instincts of a lot of people is that such a facility is too expensive to built and it can't be done, maybe we just need to open our minds a little more, and explore what can be done. Just because we have built health and aged care facilities in a certain way in the last 100 years, doesn't mean we have to continue building them that way in future. We often don't think about such issues until our loved ones are put in that situation. For someone living with Dementia, their reality and ours is different, and what makes they happy is just what De Hogeweyk has achieved. I met with the founders, and for them and all their staff, seeing their loved ones cared for in such an environment brings such relief and comfort. Its a home where they would feel assured to have their loved ones living there. Pic attached was taken with one of the clients who lives there, she volunteers with pushing the lolly trolley every afternoon accompanied with a volunteer. Free lollies, most importantly, smiles all around from fellow neighbours and staff. If happiness was a KPI, perhaps the aged care world would be a little different.

The story behind ASPIRE55

I am often asked why a young person like myself would want to start ASPIRE55? When I first brought up the idea and brainstormed it with fellow co-founder, Yiing Ching (YC), we talked about it with our family members in mind. How would they age, where would they live, what type of activities and services they would need if they were to continue living in their own homes. As such, ASPIRE55 has been and will always be a family oriented village, where we bring our families and friends together, and we welcome new members into the ASPIRE55 family.

Grandma at 82 years old has always been one of my biggest inspirations for my focus on the ageing sector. When I brought her on a cruise recently, she was walking stronger and more steadily than people over 10 years younger than her. Since a year ago, she has been regularly introduced to different activities and new friends. She works out twice a week and she loves chatting with younger friends. When she goes to the park downstairs, she loves practicing English with our Caucasian neighbors. Something I have learnt is that simply telling our loved ones to go out, go exercise, go make new friends, go take up a new course, does not work. If you care about your them, take the time to accompany them through the first step. Many of our members first visit to our club is accompanied by their friends or family members. Sometimes, all they need is just a little encouragement and support from us when we are trying to get them to try something new.

Member Suggestions - Trip to Kukup, Malaysia - By Simon Teo

Simon suggested a trip up to a Kelong in Kukup. A bus would pick members from Singapore to drive up to Kukup for a seafood dining and fun experience in a kelong. Kukup is a small fishing village located in the district of Pontian, Johor, on the Strait of Malacca in Malaysia. We could head up for a 3 day 2 night trip or a 2 day 1 night trip. We can head up in Nov / Dec this year. Anyone interested can email janice@aspire55.com

My Grandma's experience in the strength training workouts

Maternal grandma has been working out twice a week for the past 3 months, so proud of her. Its nice that see her carrying her walking stick versus using it now. In a way, my wellbeing innovation lab at one commonwealth is inspired by her, i wanted to create a friendly homelike environment that makes older people more comfortable with the equipment, plus she loves the kitchen concept with the communal table. Good chance for me to buy kueh kueh when she comes over too. Kinda reminds me of the past when our family used to gather at each other's houses with the elders gambling and having a big makan session every weekend. I miss that.
